Microsoft Sued Indian Company for Technical Support Scam

Various international fraudsters are exploiting the tech-savvy reputation of Indians to trick computer users into giving them the access to their machines by pretending to be from Microsoft.

Now the technology giant is fighting back suing several companies, including an Indian one, alleging they falsely claimes to be Microsoft-affiliated technical support.

"In its first big strike against technical support scamming companies, Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) filed a civil lawsuit in federal court in the central district of California against Omnitech Support and related entities for unfair and deceptive business practices and trademark infringement," a Microsoft spokesperson told IANS on Tuesday.

One of the companies named in  case filed recently is C-Cubed Solutions Private Limited, which the court papers said is "a private business company formed under the laws of India" that operates the mail server through which "fraudulent technical support businesses communicate with customers".

Microsoft's suit said that 3.3 million Americans fall victim to technical support scams every year and lose $1.5 billion.

Describing the fraud, senior Microsoft attorney Courtney Gregoire wrote in a company blog, "These scammers claim to find non-existent computer viruses and infections then con people out of their hard-earned money for bogus tech support, in addition to stealing personal and financial information or even installing new malicious software." Microsoft has received over 65,000 complaints about such scams since May, she wrote.

The court papers specifically mention alleged frauds using web sites and phone numbers from the sites leading to scammers that Microsoft said it had investigated.

Many people in the US have reported receiving telephone calls - in several instances from persons speaking with an Indian accent and using Indian names - claiming to be from Microsoft or a related organisations and saying a problem has been discovered in their computer.

In a typical call a person identifying himself as "Raj" from Microsoft called from a number with a Washington, DC, telephone area code and claimed that the company had identified a problem with the computer. Asked in one instance how he knew about the problem and if he had hacked the computer, "Raj" said he had. When he was told that hacking was a crime, he hung up.

Unwary computer users who take the bait are asked to visit a web site or to download a program, which will introduce a malware that can collect information like logons and financial data or be used to spread the malware. The information collected can be used for identity theft. In other cases, they ask for remote access to the computer and demand credit card numbers to collect their fees.

According to Snopes, a website that tracks internet misinformation and fraud, people in several countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and England, have received such calls.

Microsoft's lawsuit filed Dec 18 names three companies, besides C-Cubed Solutions, and two individuals. It said that Marc Haberman, Rachel Eilat Haberman, and Jay Wurzberger were among C-Cubed Solutions' directors.

The main reason for the alleged scammers' success, the suit said, "is that they create an impression that they represent or have an association with Microsoft". Through this they divert "consumers from identifying and contacting a legitimate technical service provider for their service needs", the complaint added.

"Consumers will never receive a call from Microsoft or our partners asking for a credit card number to charge for computer fixes," the Microsoft spokesperson said. "Our guidance for consumers is to never provide your personal information to unsolicited callers and or e-mailers, and if they are having a problem with their PC, contact Microsoft customer service and support."

The US Federal Trade Commission advised consumers, "If you get a call from someone who claims to be a tech support person, hang up and call the company yourself on a phone number you know to be genuine. A caller who creates a sense of urgency or uses high-pressure tactics is probably a scam artist."

MS Dhoni Retires from Test Cricket

MS Dhoni has retired from Test cricket with an immediate effect. The decision comes after India drew the third Test in Melbourne on Tuesday. Out of the 90 Tests he played, Dhoni led Indian cricket team  in 60 matches. Dhoni finished with most Test wins as India captain (27), beating the previous best of 21 wins held by Sourav Ganguly.
A BCCI statement said: “One of India's greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No.1 team in the Test rankings Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket. Dhoni has chosen to retire from Tests with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODIs and T20 formats.
"BCCI, while respecting the decision of Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Tests and the laurels that he has brought to India."
Virat Kohli will captain India in the fourth and final Test against Australia in Sydney from January 6. India have already lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy having lost the first two Tests in Adelaide and Brisbane. Kohli had led in the first Test when Dhoni preferred to rest his injured right hand.
Dhoni bowed out of Test cricket in style. In his final series in Australia, Dhoni became the first Indian wicketkeeper to effect nine dismissals in a Test match in Melbourne.
Overall, he became the third wicketkeeper to achieve the feat versus Australia, the first two being David Murray (West Indies) at Melbourne in December 1981 and Ridley Jacobs (West Indies) at Melbourne in December 2000.
With the bat, Dhoni also became the first Indian batsman to complete 10,000 runs or more as captain in international cricket, joining Ricky Ponting (15440), Graeme Smith (14878), Stephen Fleming (11561) and Allan Border (11062).

PK to Surpass Dhoom 3's Business: PVR Pictures

"All I can say is that Dhoom 3 which released last year had also done tremendous business at the box office, but with the way early signals are from PK, it's looking like a film which will end up with better box office and better occupancy," PVR Pictures CEO Kamal Giachandani said.

Dhoom 3 amassed a whopping Rs 280.25 crore in terms of domestic collections, according to website Koimoi.com. PK has already collected Rs 136.61 crore in its first five days, according to this website.

PK is expected to continue its strong momentum in the absence of any major release in  next few weeks and Christmas holidays. Positive reviews and word-of-mouth publicity is expected to also boost the box office performance of PK.

"The occupancies have been over 90 per cent not just in PVR chain, but I believe across the country, which is quite a phenomenal act considering the film had an ultra-wide with almost 6,300 theatres," Mr Giachandani says.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, PK was released on Friday. Alongside Aamir Khan, PK also stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjay Dutt.

Obama is 'Like A Monkey In A Tropical Forest', Said by North Korea in Hacking Row

North Korea called President Barack Obama "a monkey" and blamed the US on Saturday for the shutting down its internet amid the hacking row over the comedy movie, 'The Interview'.

North Korea has denied involvement in a crippling cyberattack on Sony Pictures but has expressed fury over the comedy depicting an assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un. After Sony Pictures initially called off the release in a decision criticized by Obama, the movie has opened this week.

North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission, the country's top governing body led by Kim, said that Obama was behind the release of 'The Interview' on Saturday. It described the movie as illegal, dishonest and reactionary.

"Obama always goes reckless in his words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest," an unidentified spokesman at the Commission's Policy Department said in a statement, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

He also accused Washington for intermittent outages of North Korea websites this week, after the US had promised to respond to the Sony hack.

There was no immediate reaction from the White House on Saturday.

According to the North Korea Commission's spokesman, "the US, a big country, started disturbing the Internet operation of major media of the DPRK, not knowing shame like children playing a tag."

The Commission said the movie was the result of a hostile US policy toward North Korea, and threatened the US with unspecified consequences.

North Korea and the US remain technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The rivals also are locked in an international standoff over the North's nuclear and missile programs and its alleged human rights abuses. The US stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea as deterrence against North Korean aggression.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Keen to invest more in India, Microsoft's chief Satya Nadella today pledged support to PM Narendra Modi's Digital India initiative.

Besides PM Modi, India-born Mr Nadella also met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and discussed modernisation and security of the government's digital infrastructure, among other issues.

"It was a courtesy visit. Microsoft is the company that is a multinational but is operating in India for India and Indian businesses... In every meeting of course both 'Digital India' and 'Make in India' are top of mind and for us, top of mind in terms of our contribution to India," Mr Nadella said after his meeting with Mr Jaitley.

This was the  second visit of him to India since taking over as global CEO of USD 86-billion technology giant Microsoft.

Sources in the Finance Ministry said Mr Nadella had informed Mr Jaitley that Microsoft was keen on "investing more" in India.

"The Minister (Prasad) shared with Mr Nadella the initiative of Digital India taken by this government headed by the Prime Minister. He told the Microsoft CEO that Digital India is designed to bridge the gap between haves and have-nots," Communication and IT Ministry said in a statement.

Mr Prasad also shared with him India's potential in the field of e-Commerce and how connectivity can play a role in harnessing this potential, he added.

"The Minister further urged Microsoft to work towards digital literacy in India... The Minister also informed about the incentives for promoting electronic manufacturing in India as a part of Make in India," it said.

Microsoft is keen on collaborating with the government in providing last mile Internet connectivity, especially through the Wi-Fi technology, the statement added.

Mr Nadella also shared his ideas on modernisation of government with Mr Prasad stating that Microsoft can help in building secure government controlled digital infrastructure.

Other issues like data security and domestic electronic manufacturing were also discussed.

Xiaomi Mi 5 to Sport Sapphire Display; MiPad 2 to Feature Intel SoC

Two devices from Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi expected at CES 2015 are the Mi 5 or Mi 4S smartphone and the MiPad 2 tablet.
The anticipated flagship smartphone from Xiaomi has been leaked in purported specifications and an image. The alleged Mi 5 or Mi 4S from the purported image appears to be a large screen smartphone or phablet, and likely uses a sapphire glass display, reports DigiTimes (via PhoneArena).

The sapphire glass rumour is in-line with a  report, where the company was saying to have ordered 50,000 sapphire covers for the smartphone.

As far as the specifications are concerned, the anticipated Mi 5 or Mi 4S smartphone is rumoured to feature a 5.7-inch Quad-HD (1440x2560 pixels) display; a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor; 3GB of RAM, and a 20.7-megapixel rear camera.

On the other hand, the anticipated next generation Xiaomi MiPad tablet, expected to be called the MiPad 2, has also been leaked in pictures and specifications on Weibo (via GizmoChina). The report speculates that these pictures could be fake however, as there is no Mi branding on top of the pictured tablet and its overall design is very different from the current MiPad.

Raghubar Das will be First Non-Tribal Chief Minister of Jharkhand

RANCHI: The BJP leader Raghubar Das to  be the next chief minister of Jharkhand, the first non-tribal leader in the state to hold the post. The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of the party's newly-elected lawmakers in the state capital Ranchi.

The BJP and its ally, the All Jharkhand Students' Union, had won the state polls, winning 42 seats in the 81-member assembly.

59-year-old Mr Das, a former deputy chief minister and BJP vice president, had been teached a frontrunner for  top job especially after three-time former chief minister Arjun Munda, considered the tallest tribal leader of the party, lost the elections from his stronghold Kharsawan. Another former chief minister from the party, Babulal Marandi who lost two seats that he contested, is also a related.

tribal leader.

Hence, the BJP is reportedly considering a tribal leader as deputy chief minister to placate the community which comprises around 32 per cent of Jharkhand's population. Neelkanth Munda and Shiv Shankar Urav, sources say, are the likely contenders for the post. Mr Munda, sources add, is likely to be appointed a national vice president of the party.

Two senior BJP leaders, Health Minister JP Nadda and Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, were the observers at today's legislature party meeting to oversee the election of the new chief minister.

"The party's Parliamentary Board and the honorable Prime Minister will take a decision on this. But I wish to assure the people of Jharkhand and Jamshedpur that I would always be there to serve them," Mr Das, 59, said on Tuesday soon after it emerged that the BJP-led coalition had emerged victorious.

Jharkhand has had nine governments and three stints of President's Rule since it was created in 2000.

In its election campaign, the BJP had promised a stable government in the state. It did not project a chief ministerial candidate and built its campaign around Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his development agenda. The PM had addressed several rallies in the state.

Ten Games We Look Forward to the Most in 2015

While 2014 has been a largely disappointing year in field of games - some of the big releases of the year, like Assassin's Creed: Unity, were filled with bugs while other anticipated titles seeing their release dates pushed to 2015. However, then year wasn't a total write-off and we've already listed the games we enjoy the most this year. Having said that, we have high expectations from 2015, and here are the 10 titles we look forward to the most.
1. Batman: Arkham Knight
Batman: Arkham Knight is the first next-gen outing of everyone's favourite superhero. The Arkham series has been consistently good, with combat in particular being a delight, and hopes are high for this game too. And while the last three games featured a solid narrative and a host of villains from the comics, this entry features the Batmobile and a new antagonist known as the Arkham Knight.

However we're most interested in  simple pleasures it promises such as being able to strike fear into  hearts of common criminals just before swooping down to end their crime spree in a style befitting the caped crusader.
Expected date of release: Summer 2015
2. No Man's Sky
No Man's Sky has you going where every sci-fi loving fan has gone before - space. This time however you're exploring its depths minus any heavy-handed direction, trying-too-hard-to-be witty sayings, or god rays much like the slew of sci-fi movies we've been treated to. In their place is a gorgeous galaxy that has you exploring planets galore, each of which has its own unique environment and creatures.
The scale is immense and from partaking in space battles to diving into the very depths of a planet's seas, there's a lot to do. There's a welcome focus on exploration rather than narrative. With the game's many planets being procedurally generated much like FTL: Faster Than Light, expect a different play-through every time.
Expected date of release: PS4 in June, followed by the PC.
3. Rogue Star
Expected to launch in early-2015, this iPad game will bring the joy of space exploration titles to tablets. The genre is seeing a bit of a revival thanks to games like Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous, but if you're looking for a game that mixes combat, smuggling, mining, and the simple joy of flying between planets, then Rogue Star sounds like a good pick for mobile gamers.

Expected date of release: Early 2015
4. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Unlike other franchises that have yearly releases, Sony's flagship series has been on quite the hiatus. The last time we regaled in the adventures of everyone's favourite male Lara Croft, Nathan Drake was on the PS Vita with Uncharted: Golden Abyss. This was followed by the spin-off card game Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, but we've seen very little else.

That was of course until this year's PlayStation Experience that showed off a generous amount of gameplay featuring exotic locales, stealth mechanics, and satisfying melee combat. It's looking spectacular to say the least.
Expected date of release: Sometime in 2015
5. Halo 5: Guardians
The Halo series is synonymous with the Xbox. While we got a collection of the series stalwart Master Chief's greatest hits with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, there's been very little else. With Halo 4, new developers 343 Industries had proved that they could make a very proficient game, but it felt a little flat, so there's a lot of attention being given now to Halo 5: Guardians.

With a rather promising multiplayer beta going on, we can't say we're not interested to see how this sci-fi first person shooter shapes up. Expect to be blasting through hordes of aliens late in 2015.
Expected date of release: Late 2015
6. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
A world bigger than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? Check. An emphasis on shaping the aforementioned world around you by the choices you make? Check. Almost a hundred hours of things to do? Check. There's very little reason not to be piqued about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - even more so if you're a fan of role-playing games. Throw in improved combat and an array of fantastical beasts to battle against and May can't come soon enough.

Expected date of release: May 2015
7. Submerged
We don't know too much about the upcoming iOS game Submerged, but the Unreal Engine 4 powered visuals are amazing. In the game, you have to explore an ancient city, to try and find supplies in a simple fishing boat, and scale the ruined buildings. Not much is known about the gameplay yet, but developer Uppercut has some good titles in their backlog already so we're quite excited. The game is expected sometime in 2015 and if this is what mobile games are starting to look like now, then we are officially living in the future.
Expected date of release: Sometime in 2015
8. Bloodborne
Bloodborne is not for the faint-hearted. Borrowing a page or two hundred from many a goth fantasy, you're thrown into Yharnam City, it's a sinister place wrapped with Lovecraftian horrors and beasts that haunt your every move. Fear not however, you aren't left defenceless. With swords and guns aplenty you have most of what you need to get by.
Don't expect it to be easy considering that it's made by the creators of Dark Souls. The combat is quicker with an emphasis on attacking moves compared to the Souls' series that had a more balanced approach to the proceedings.
Expected date of release: March 2015 for the PS4
9. Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain
This year's Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes gave us a taste of what to expect from the genius that is series creator Hideo Kojima. However with a criminally short duration of its main campaign, we were left wanting more. We can't wait to get back into the boots and eye-patched guise of soldier of fortune, Big Boss to sneak and skulk our way across a myriad of interesting vistas all while soaking in a story that's got more twists and turns than your daily soap opera.

Expected date of release: Mid-2015
10. Runescape Legends
This year, one of the games we loved the most was Hearthstone, a competitive card game with characters set in
Blizzard's World of Warcraft. Runescape - which first released in 2001 - is an even older massively multiplayer roleplaying game, but over the years it had to settle for playing second fiddle to Blizzard's behemoth. After the unexpected surprise of Hearthstone, Runescape is trying to play catch up yet again, but the first few teasers we've seen for Runescape Legends looks similar.

We loved Hearthstone, and if more games of this genre come out with the same focus on art as well as gameplay, then we're certainly looking forward to it.
Expected date of release: Sometime in 2015
Of course there are plenty of other big games that have already been announced for a 2015 release. So tell us which game you are looking forward to the most, via the comments.

On catwalks since the age of three, Kristina, who models for Armani and Roberto Cavalli, is famed for her big blue eyes and bewitching smile, with over 2.5 million fans on the Facebook and nearly 500,000 followers on the Instagram.

"She is a very modest girl, she does not know what it is, this star-mania," her mother Glikeria Pimenova, a former model herself, told the AFP.

"She never hears the word 'popularity', we simply do not use it at home," she said.

The PM inspected the Assi Ghat, where he had wielded a spade back in November to launch the Clean Ganga Mission. On that occasion too, he had tagged nine people, including Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav, for the Clean India Campaign.

PK STARS AAMIR AS A DISPLACED ALIEN CHALLENGING NOTIONS OF GOD AND RELIGION, WHILE IN OH MY GOD, PARESH RAWAL UNRAVELS THE HYPOCRISY OF RELIGIOUS SYSTEM

If you have seen Bollywood star Aamir Khan's recently released film PK, you may have found parallels with director Umesh Shukla's 2012 film OMG! Oh My God.

PK director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra too noticed uncanny similarities between OMG! Om My God! and their then work-in-progress script of PK.

Team PK, along with Aamir, had then approached Umesh Shukla and reportedly offered the director a whopping Rs 8 crore to stop shooting the film.

Rajkumar Hirani had started writing PK, while shooting for his 2009 film 3 Idiots and had also narrated the draft to actor Aamir Khan during the time.

PK stars Aamir as a displaced alien and challenges notions of God and religion, while in OMG! Oh My God, actor Paresh Rawal, shown to be non-believer in God, unravels the hypocrisy of religious system backed by none other than Lord Krishna, played by Akshay Kumar.

OMG! Oh My God is based on a Gujarati play titled Kanji Virudh Kanji.

Meanwhile, trouble doesn't end for PK here. The film which opened to five star reviews, was accused of being "anti-Hindu". And now, a case has been filed in Lucknow court for objectionable scenes hurting Hindu sentiments.

The film, which also stars actors Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput in pivotal roles, released on December 19 and has collected more than Rs 95 crore in the opening weekend.

Rajinikanth Gives Tribute To His Guru K Balachander

Superstar Rajinikanth pays tribute to his guru, Director K Balachander who died on Tuesday. He spended more than an hour with the family of K Balachander. An emotionally disturbed Rajinikanth said " Balachender was my friend, philosopher and guide. I've no words. I feel like I've lost myself. I pray God to rest his soul in peace."

"KB sir was not just my guru. He was like my father as well. He also never saw me as an actor and treated me like his own son. He was like a god in human form and I feel lost in his absence," Rajinikanth added in his statement.

Aamir khan,Ranbir kapoor might be in PK sequel

Aamir Khan's release PK is receiving mixed reactions from the audiences. The film has managed to collect cash with decent opening weekend collections at the box office. NASA Planned Airships, Floating City for Manned Venus Mission

WASHINGTON: NASA planned to send solar-powered airships to explore Venus' atmosphere and to eventually establish a permanent human colony in a floating cloud city above the Earth's nearest planetary neighbour.

Dale Arney and Chris Jones, from the Space Mission Analysis Branch of NASA's Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate at Langley Research Center, in Virginia, has proposed that it may make sense to go to Venus before we ever send humans to Mars.

NASA's High Altitude Venus Operational Concept (HAVOC) mission aims to explore the atmosphere of Venus instead of exploring the surface.

The researchers believe the upper atmosphere of the Venus is "probably the most Earth-like environment that's out there."

At 50 kilometres above its surface, Venus offers one atmosphere of pressure and only slightly lower gravity than Earth.

Astronauts would also be protected from radiation in Venus's atmosphere, researchers says. The planet's proximity to the Sun provides it 40 per cent more solar power than the Earth gets, and 240 per cent more than that seen on Mars.

Since the orbits of Venus and Earth align over time, a crewed mission to Venus would take a total of 440 days using existing or very near-term propulsion technology, 'IEEE' reported.

But getting to Mars and back using the same propulsive technology would involve more than 500 days in space at a minimum.

HAVOC involves a series of missions, including a robotic mission first and then a crewed mission to Venus orbit with a stay of 30 days, and then a mission that includes a 30-day atmospheric stay.

Later missions would have a crew of two spend a year in the atmosphere, and eventually there would be a permanent human presence there in a floating cloud city.

A helium-filled, solar-powered airship would explore the planet's atmosphere. The robotic version would be 31 metres long while the crewed version would be nearly 130 metres long.

The crewed version would come with a small habitat and the ascent vehicle, a winged two-stage rocket slung below the airship, that the astronauts would use to return to Venus's orbit and home.
